Inspiration:

Sweet potatoes are perfect fuel for athletes: known for being a “healthier carb” as they are low on the glycemic index scale, these carbs are slow to absorb into the digestion system avoiding big blood sugar spikes giving you long-lasting energy. Sweet potatoes are also loaded with vitamins and fiber.

For a healthy alternative, these spiced sweet potato “fries” are baked vs fried. The spices are different than the standard you may be used to; a welcome addition to any Middle Eastern or Mediterranean-Inspired cooking.

Ingredients:

serves 4

1.5 lbs (approx x2 medium) sweet potatoes cut in half crosswise and then cut into wedges
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon kosher sea salt
Pinch red chile flakes

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 425˚F. Prepare a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.

Toss all ingredients in a large bowl until the spices and olive oil have coated the yams. Spread the yams on the baking sheet, making sure they’re cut-side down.

Bake for 24 minutes, flipping the yams halfway through, until they’re golden brown and getting crispy around the edges.

Serve warm.

A few notes:

This recipe can be a platform for many other spiced variations. Other favorites of mine include: olive oil + cinnamon + cayenne pepper OR coconut oil + cinnamon + nutmeg. You get the idea!

Do you have leftovers? Double the recipe and consider chopping up leftover and adding to salads throughout the week.
